Marcel Gotène is a pioneering figure of Congolese modern art and one of the founding members of the renowned Poto-Poto School of Painting in Brazzaville. Trained in the late 1950s under the guidance of French painter Pierre Lods, Gotène quickly developed a distinctive artistic language that would shape generations of Congolese artists.

His work is characterized by expressive line work, rhythmic compositions, and a powerful sense of movement.
